We’ve visited many campgrounds across the United States.
When selecting our accommodations, I typically try my best to find National or State campgrounds with electric. I enjoy the more natural feel and elbow room of these parks. I prefer to stay away from the typical RV park with full hookups. While I know some people like all the bells and whistles amenities, it’s just not the experience I’m looking for in my typical outing. Of course there are some exceptions depending on what the options are and what the intent is. And although we don’t need all the extras, I am pretty spoiled and needy of electric whenever possible. I do enjoy having AC and microwave available for our use.
Below is a list of the campgrounds that we have stayed at organized by state. I hope to write about some of them at some point in the future (I really should have started documenting long ago…lots of past travel I would love to catch up in writing about some day). In the meantime, I’ve included a few notable points for some.
Arizona
Grand Canyon Camper Village
California
Del Norte Coast Redwood State Park – Mill Creek Campground
The big old trees and stumps made for some very cool and unique camp sites.
Georgia
Skid away Island State Park
No early arrival allowed, even though our site and most of the campground was vacant.
Iowa
Rock Creek State Park – Rock Creek Campground
Kansas
Gunsmoke RV Park
Maine
Acadia National Park – Schoodic Woods Campground
This was one of the cleanest campgrounds we’d ever visited, because it was brand new when we visited in 2016. We did get a note of scolding for having Christmas lights on our awning left on all night.
Maryland
Assateague Island National Seashore – Bayside Loop A
Lots of mosquitos, flies and horses
Massachusetts
Dunes Edge Campground
Winter Island Park
Interesting set up, in city marina with cool old buildings, fort and lighthouse
Michigan
Harrisville State Park
Hartwick Pines State Park
Harvest Village (Harvest Host)
Holly State Recreation Area
Ludington State Park
Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore – Platte River Campground
Straits State Park
Sterling State Park
Tawas Point State Park
Traverse City State Park
Wilderness State Park
Van Buren State Park
Minnesota
Myer-Big Island State Park – Big Island Campground
Lots of mosquito repellent is a must
Missouri
Mark Twain Cave Campgrounds
Mill Creek
Campground on a lake and close to Branson. But prone to flooding. We got an alert just days before arrival that our reservations were canceled due to flooding. I quickly called and snagged one of the only sites dry and available.
Watkins Mill State Park
Nebraska
Lake Mcconaughey State Recreation Area – Lone Eagle
Nevada
Lake Meade RV Village
New Mexico
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park Campground
Villanueva State Park Campground
New Jersey
Liberty Harbor RV Park
Just a few blocks from subway station for easy access to NYC. Within a couple miles of the New Jersey docks for the Statue of Island boats. It’s a parking lot in a marina, but actually pretty cool atmosphere in that you can see the NYC skyline and statue of liberty from the site, especially at night.
New York
Four Mile Creek State Park
North Carolina
Cape Hatteras National Seashore – Oregon Inlet Campground
Cedar Point Campground
Hatteras Sands Camping Resort
We were scheduled to stay at Cape Point Campground, but arrived to find it completely under water. Hatteras Sands was accommodating to our last minute needs.
Ohio
Cedar Point’s Lighthouse Point Campground
Oregon
Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area
Wooded sites, close to highway. Nice easy hiking trails
Rhode Island
Melville Ponds Campground
No early arrivals allowed. We had to unhook and leave trailer in a lot across the street while we explored and killed time until check in time (although our site was vacant)
South Carolina
James Island County Park Campground
South Dakota
Badlands National Park – Cedar Pass Campground
Beautiful views, pull over sites. We could hear bison right up next to us while sitting out in the dark at night
Texas
Palo Duro Canyon State Park
So many great hiking trails and “Texas” musical at outdoor venue on site
Walmart Parking Lot – Canyon Texas
This was a last minute improvisation when we felt uncomfortable setting up and staying where we had planned to in Oklahoma….so we just kept driving to 2AM, to the Walmart closest to our next reserved campground.
Utah
Dead Horse Point State Park
Beautiful views and located right between Arches and Canyonlands
Vermont
North Beach Campground, Burlington
Virginia
First Landing State Park
Sherando Lake Recreation Area Family Camping – Meadow Loop
Washington
Seaquest State Park
Wooded sites very close to Mt St Helen Visitor’s center
Wyoming
Yellowstone National Park – Fishing Bridge Campground
Very much an RV park feel, sites are very narrow and mostly concrete, but when at Yellowstone, how much time do you really spend at the camper anyway?
